Karla Espinoza has turned her passion for working with children into a fulfilling career with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health.
Espinoza is a nurse assistant for Health Centers in Schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System. She assists students and parents with an emphasis on providing care for students living with diabetes.
She is able to use her native language to support families who only speak Spanish, translating for students and parents and the schools’ nurses. Espinoza has been part of our health system for a decade.
Honoring Her Hispanic Heritage
Espinoza and her family are originally from Honduras in Central America. They have been in the U.S. for more than 20 years.
One way the family keeps its heritage alive is celebrating Honduran Independence Day every September 15 by cooking a variety of traditional foods. The family also enjoys Christmas Eve celebrations that feature plenty of food, staying overnight talking, dancing and having fun.
Food is a way to connect, both to our own culture and to experience others’ cultures. Espinoza’s favorite cultural dish is arróz con pollo (rice and chicken).
