“The time is always right to do what is right.” This quote by Martin Luther King Jr. inspires Candace Y. Perry, during Black History Month and every day.
Taking Time to Listen
In her role as an emergency room tech at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Perry is intentional about the quality of care she provides to her patients and has been for the nearly 10 years she’s worked for the ministry.
In addition to the influence from her family who have supported and motivated her, Perry was inspired to pursue her career because she wants to help others.
“When you are helping people, you are lifting them and yourself,” she says. “When I see that there is a need, I look at it as an opportunity. At work, we are always talking about our core behaviors; being the guide, the bridge, the catalyst and the love. Those strengths provide compassionate care that sets us apart from everyone else.”
Through her compassionate care Perry works to make things better. “I want to take the time to listen, build lasting relationships and let our patients know that we are here for them, and we care.”
Regarding Health Equity
Perry realizes many other factors determine a person’s overall health including access to transportation, healthy foods and safe living conditions. Screening for and addressing these social determinants of health is a standard part of the care provided by Our Lady of the Lake Health.
“We must see each patient as an individual,” Perry says. “Providing continuity of care ensures all patients receive the care they need.”
Perry values the diversity in her workplace as a reflection of the broader community. “We are reminding others and ourselves that our community is reflective of service.”
Building Beloved Community
This year in recognition of Black History Month, our health system is reflecting on The King Center’s 2023 theme to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and life: It Starts with Me: Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset.
“Three ways I cultivate my community are building trust, social awareness and education,” Perry says.
