Every day, our doctors go above and beyond to help our communities heal. On March 30, we celebrate Doctors’ Day, expressing our appreciation to those who care for us and guide us to maintain a healthy lifestyle all year.
Paige Guillory, MD, FAAP, pediatrician with Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health, has been part of our ministry for nearly four years and shared her thoughts on being a doctor.
1. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine/healthcare? Why did you choose your specialty?
I was always interested in science and healthcare but didn’t know what I wanted to do while in was in college. I started shadowing different doctors and really fell in love with medicine. I was always babysitting, and I was a nanny in college, so it was a given that I would choose a specialty that allowed me to work with kids.
2. Have there been any challenges you’ve faced and overcome in your career journey? Who has influenced you most in your career?
I have worked with so many incredible physicians over the years that have shaped me into the doctor I am today, even the ones that were not in pediatrics! I really loved my medical school training in all departments.
3. What do you like most about being a doctor?
I love well checks and seeing how these babies grow and develop with each one! Sometimes I don’t even recognize the babies from the 2-week well-check to the 2-month well check because they have grown so much!
4. If you weren’t a doctor, what would you do?
Something creative, like flipping houses or being a food blogger
5. How do you ensure your patients feel heard during their visit?
I try to do my best to not interrupt and then take my time to write out instructions and go over everything with the family at the end of the visit. I try to look out for body language that could signal if they feel uncomfortable or if they need me to take more time with them.
6. Why did you choose Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group for your practice?
I have been with Our Lady of the Lake since residency and knew I wanted to stick around after. I actually pursued them when I was looking for a job and asked them to create a spot for me in New Roads.
7. What is something that people may be surprised to know about you? Is there anything else you would want to share in a profile about you and your career?
Fun fact about me is that I usually read about 50 books per year. My goal this year is 60+. Reading is by far my favorite pastime when I have downtime.
