At Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, every day brings incredible stories of strength, hope and healing. From advanced surgeries to compassionate care, we’re honored to support families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
As we celebrate our fifth anniversary in our new home, we’re proud to reflect on the strides we’ve made. We continue to invest in our healthcare infrastructure and introduce state-of-the-art technologies, ensuring Louisiana’s kids have access to the best pediatric care right here in Baton Rouge.
We’re giving a big “high five” to the top five moments that have defined our journey so far.
1. Grand Opening Celebration (October 5, 2019)
Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital officially opened our doors in 2019, marking a monumental moment in pediatric healthcare for the region. The excitement and joy from that day still echo in our halls, as families and community members came together to witness the unveiling of this state-of-the-art facility dedicated to children’s health.
The grand opening wasn’t just a celebration of a new building — it was the start of a promise to provide top-quality care to every child who walks through our doors.
This milestone marked a new chapter in pediatric care for Louisiana, as families from across the state and beyond now had access to a dedicated children’s hospital equipped with cutting-edge technology, designed specifically for young patients. The opening day remains a powerful reminder of our mission to be a place where kids receive the best care possible.
2. The Newton & Betsy Thomas Family Center for Newborn & Infant Intensive Care Opens (December 2020)
In December 2020, we expanded our ability to care for our tiniest patients by opening the Newton & Betsy Thomas Family Center for Newborn & Infant Intensive Care (NICU).
This state-of-the-art facility makes it possible to provide life-saving care for premature and critically ill newborns, ensuring families can stay close to home during such an important time.
With private rooms, advanced equipment and a compassionate team, our NICU offers a comforting environment for families navigating the uncertainties of a NICU stay. We’ve seen countless tiny fighters take their first steps toward recovery here, surrounded by love and expert care.
3. First and Only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in the Capital Region (December 2022)
Achieving recognition as the Capital Region’s first and only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center was a major milestone for our hospital and the Baton Rouge community. This recognition means that we are prepared to handle the most severe and complex injuries, providing immediate, expert care when every second counts.
Being verified as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center is not just a badge of honor; it’s a promise to our community. Our trauma team stands ready around the clock, prepared to respond swiftly to emergencies and provide the highest level of care to young patients when they need it most.
4. Hogs for the Cause Family Support Home Opens (February 2024)
The Hogs for the Cause Family Support Home is a beacon of hope and comfort for families whose children are receiving treatment at our hospital. This facility, made possible by the incredible support of Hogs for the Cause, offers families a place to stay, relax and find support during some of their most challenging times.
Our family support home isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a community of support, where families can find comfort, understanding and a sense of belonging while their children receive the specialized care they need. It’s another way we aim to care for the whole family, not just the patient.
5. Our Children’s Hospital’s First Flap Surgery – A Surgical Solution (April 2024)
April 2024 marked another “first” as our hospital performed its first flap surgery — a highly specialized surgical technique that demonstrates our commitment to expanding the complex care we provide. This procedure represents a new level of advanced surgical care available to our young patients and their families.
This surgery not only demonstrated the skill and dedication of our surgical team but also highlighted our commitment to bringing advanced treatment options to the children of Louisiana. It represents our ongoing investment in the future of pediatric healthcare.
