Gayle McDonald marked an incredible milestone last May, celebrating 45 years as an operating room service line specialist at St. Francis Health. Her journey began here as a surgical tech, and she has remained dedicated to her role, consistently contributing to our mission.

Finding a Home in the Operating Room

Gayle chose to start her career here because it was where she trained, and she quickly grew comfortable with the team and environment. Over the years, she has stayed because of her love for the job and the people she works with.

“We are like a family in surgery,” Gayle shares. “We work as a team and have an awesome boss who is approachable and caring, plus we have the best surgeons.”

Honoring Traditions and Building Friendships

Gayle’s career is filled with memorable moments. She’s had the honor of working with three generations of Dr. Liles, and through the years, she’s formed lasting friendships and learned more than she ever could have in school.

One of Gayle’s favorite aspects of her job is assisting with cystoscopy cases. She holds the urology doctors in high regard, noting that they’ve always treated her with respect and have been generous with sharing their knowledge. This, in turn, has allowed her to excel in her role and provide even better support.

Influential Mentors

Gayle credits much of her success to two mentors.

Mary Shamblin, her instructor during training, instilled principles that Gayle still follows today, despite being a tough teacher. Dorothy Jackson, her preceptor and “part-time mama,” taught her the importance of work ethic and being a team player.

A Constant Presence Through Life’s Seasons

When asked how much longer she plans to work, Gayle’s answer is simple: “I really don’t know. I love my job and like being productive. I would like to work at least another year, maybe two.”

As she reflects on her career, Gayle says, “There have been many different seasons in my life, but through all of them, St. Francis has been the constant part of each one.”
