Infection prevention isn’t just about policies and protocols — it’s about people.
Karen Estela, MPH, RN, CIC, FAPIC, an infection prevention nurse at Our Lady of the Lake, makes every decision centered on ensuring patients receive the best care possible.
As a valued team member for more than a decade, Karen’s career reflects growth, dedication and an unwavering commitment to her patients and colleagues.
a journey of growth and discovery
Karen’s connection to Our Lady of the Lake began in 1997 when she started as a floor nurse. Her passion for public health and infection prevention soon became evident, and this drive took her to New Orleans, where she earned a master’s in public health at Tulane.
Returning in 2015, she brought a renewed dedication to infection prevention.
“Since then, I’ve had the chance to grow, continue my education and take on different roles — all while staying true to my passion for caring for people,” she says.
leading through a pandemic
Karen’s expertise was key when the pandemic struck.
“The biggest challenge came during COVID,” she says. “We were leading. We knew our work helped our team and our patients, and it gave our staff the knowledge to care for themselves and their families.”
Even as her responsibilities intensified, Karen ensured guidelines remained practical and achievable.
championing a culture of belonging
As the leader of Our Lady of the Lake Health’s inclusion and health equity efforts, Karen brings her passion for creating a more inclusive environment. She’s dedicated to ensuring that every individual — whether patient or team member — feels seen, heard and respected.
Infection prevention is rooted in understanding people’s unique needs. Similarly, supporting inclusivity and belonging allows Karen to advocate for everyone, ensuring that care and workspaces are welcoming to all.
living the mission every day
For Karen, the most compelling aspect of her work is Our Lady of the Lake’s mission. It’s not just words on paper — it is a lived experience, one that shapes the way she approaches every patient interaction and leadership opportunity.
“What attracts me most to Our Lady of the Lake Health is our mission and how our team and our leaders live it daily in what we do,” Karen says. “We’re here to be a healing presence with each other and the communities we serve, and we do it every single day.”
a balancing act: career and life
Throughout her career, Karen has balanced numerous roles. One thing has remained constant — her belief in the importance of work-life balance. She credits Our Lady of the Lake with supporting her ability to prioritize her family while excelling in her career.
“I love how Our Lady of the Lake helps me reach my priorities and my goals, both in my career and with my family,” Karen says. “I’m able to be productive at work because of the respect and understanding I receive when it’s time for me to be at home.”
infectious dedication: from prevention to people
For Karen, being a nurse is more than just a role — it’s her calling. Listening to her colleagues and leaders, she’s constantly looking for ways to improve care and safety.
“As an infection preventionist, my role involves a lot of listening — to what our team members are saying, to our leaders and to the challenges we face,” she says. “This helps me find ways to collaborate and guide in preventing infections and improving the care we provide.”
inspired by patients’ resilience
Patients are at the heart of Karen’s inspiration to continue her work in healthcare. They remind her of the importance of being present, compassionate and committed to delivering the highest quality of care.
“Patients inspire me with their gratefulness and thankfulness,” she says. “Sometimes, just hearing a simple ‘thank you’ makes a huge difference. It’s a reminder of why we’re here — to care for others and help them get better.”
a culture of respect and growth
When asked about her advice for those considering joining our health system, Karen emphasizes the organization’s supportive environment. Her experience has been one of support, growth and a sense of belonging.
“If you’re considering working for Our Lady of the Lake, know that you will be treated with dignity and respect,” she says. “We live our mission and culture daily, and we highlight one another.”
Today, Karen feels fulfilled in her role, contributing to a safer healthcare environment. “Everything came together — my background, my education and my passion for infection prevention.”
Karen’s story is a testament to how one can grow, thrive and stay inspired within an organization that prioritizes its mission and its people. From her beginnings as a floor nurse to leading initiatives that make a difference in patients’ lives, Karen’s dedication continues to shape the way we care for our patients and each other.
