For 45 years, Stella Lasalle has been a cherished part of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Across her career she has witnessed the evolution of the hospital and the lives of those she has touched. Starting her journey at just 17 years old, Stella’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her patients and colleagues.
A Young Start with a Bright Future
Stella began her career in the hospital through the cooperative office education program while still in high school.
“I worked part time until I graduated and then immediately started full time as a ward clerk on the OB ward,” she says.
From there, her path took her through various departments, including the psychiatric unit, the old main wards and the skilled nursing facility. Each role allowed her to grow her skills and deepen her connections with the hospital community.
Embracing Change and Growth
Throughout her career, Stella primarily worked in clerical positions but embraced every opportunity for growth. She ventured into surgery scheduling and patient care services, taking on roles in payroll and scheduling.
Her commitment to patient care led her to pursue certification as a patient activity coordinator, allowing her to engage directly with patients on the rehabilitation unit.
Stella also played a pivotal role in training new employees as one of the secretary trainers.
“I taught the monthly secretary classes for new employees,” she says. When the decision was made to move the hospital from the St. Landry Campus to the location on Ambassador Caffery, Stella transitioned to the position of rehab department secretary at outpatient rehab, choosing to stay close to home and continue her impactful work.
Friendships and Security: The Foundation of Her Career
What has kept Stella at Our Lady of Lourdes for all these years?
“The benefits and the many friends I’ve made along the way,” she explains. The bonds she formed with her colleagues and the sense of belonging enriched her career and created a warm work environment.
The Joy of Making a Difference
Stella’s favorite part of her job is the ability to bring joy to others.
“Putting a smile on someone’s face when they may have needed it most is what I cherish,” she says. She understands that everyone faces challenges, and a simple act of kindness can significantly impact someone’s day.
Influential Mentors Along the Way
Throughout her journey, Stella has been fortunate to have mentors who shaped her career.
“When you think of a mentor, Karen Blue was the person I looked up to most when I started as a 17-year-old employee,” Stella says. Karen’s leadership inspired Stella and left a lasting impression on her.
Another influential figure was Pauline Breaux, one of Stella’s directors.
“Pauline did so much for her employees, even when we didn’t know we needed it. She encouraged me to go to school to work as a patient activity coordinator,” Stella says. Pauline’s support extended beyond her clerical duties, as she advocated for Stella’s growth in the hospital.
A Legacy of Compassion and Dedication
After 45 years, Stella continues to embody the spirit of our health system. Her journey reflects her commitment to her colleagues, the patients she serves, and the values of compassion and kindness that define the hospital.
“I’ve made lifelong friendships, and I truly enjoy what I do,” she says, a testament to her love for her work.
