For 20 years, Teneisha Wynter, DPT, has shaped patient care at St. Dominic’s — growing from a passionate young professional to a leader in rehabilitation.

In her role as acute care rehabilitation supervisor, Teneisha oversees the day-to-day operations of the department, ensuring patients receive high-quality rehabilitation services while also supporting her team and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations.

A Passion for Patient Care

Teneisha’s journey in healthcare was driven by a deep desire to help others.

“I’ve always had a passion for helping people, especially those in need,” Teneisha says. “That passion inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a direct impact on patients’ lives and support them in their recovery.”

Teneisha earned her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Mississippi State University before completing both a master’s and doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She later pursued a master’s in healthcare administration from Belhaven University, further expanding her ability to lead and advocate for quality patient care.

Her education laid the foundation, but it was mentorship that helped shape her approach to patient care.

Inspired by Mentors, Driven by Purpose

Throughout her career, Teneisha has been shaped by mentors who encouraged her growth. Her clinical instructor during physical therapy training particularly stands out in her mind.

“She taught me the importance of compassionate care, patience and understanding that each patient is unique,” Teneisha says.

That lesson continues to guide her as she leads her team, ensuring every patient is treated with dignity, empathy and individualized care.

Honoring Black History and the Power of Representation

For Teneisha, Black History Month is a time of reflection and celebration. As a leader in healthcare, she sees firsthand how diversity strengthens the workforce and ensures better outcomes for patients.

“It’s a time to honor the struggles and triumphs of those who paved the way for future generations,” she says. This year’s theme, African Americans and Labor, resonates deeply with her.

“It highlights the contributions of African Americans to the workforce, particularly in healthcare, despite the challenges they’ve faced,” she says. “The perseverance of those who came before us has shaped the healthcare system we know today.”

One leader who has particularly inspired Teneisha is Michelle Obama.

“Her advocacy for education, health and equality speaks volumes about her dedication to improving the lives of others,” Teneisha says. A quote from the former First Lady, “When they go low, we go high,” has served as a personal mantra for Teneisha, reminding her to navigate challenges with resilience and grace.

Prioritizing Self-Care and Looking Ahead

With a demanding role in healthcare leadership, Teneisha knows the importance of balance.

“I prioritize rest by setting aside time for activities I enjoy outside of work, such as spending time with family and friends, volunteering, or exercising,” she says. “It’s important for me to recharge so that I can continue giving my best to my patients and my team.”

As she looks to the future, her goal remains the same — to make a positive impact in the lives of those she meets, whether through her work at St. Dominic Health or her service in the community.

“There’s no greater purpose and responsibility than to serve others,” she says.
