Fantasia Mitchell has been part of the health system for six years. From her first position in the health system as a patient access representative to her current role in optimizing our health IT systems, she is dedicated and passionate about making a difference within the healthcare ministry.

A Career of Growth and Learning

Fantasia’s career at FMOLHS began in the Emergency Department at Our Lady of Lourdes, where she started as a patient access representative. Right out of college, she wasn’t quite sure where her career would take her. She did know she wanted to start close to home, and a job offer from Our Lady of Lourdes helped her take the first step into healthcare.

She has served in different roles across the health system, currently working as an Epic application analyst.

The Support of Family

The unwavering support of Fantasia’s parents has been crucial to her career success.

“My parents have influenced and supported me the most,” she shares. “My dad is my numbers guy. He helps me analyze the practical details of a job, from pay to moving expenses. My mom is my spiritual guide, helping me pray and seek clarity on the path God has designed for me.”

A Time for Reflection and Action

To Fantasia, Black History Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the vast contributions of African Americans to society. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing struggles for equality and to commit to fostering respect, fairness and dignity not just during this month, but year-round.

“It’s a reminder that we need to continue standing up for those who are frequently disadvantaged,” she explains.

An Inspiration from History

One figure who particularly inspires Fantasia is Ruby Bridges, the brave six-year-old who became the first African American student to integrate an all-white public school in New Orleans.

“Her bravery and strength are unparalleled,” she says. “Ruby faced hate and anger but remained brave, knowing that what she was doing was vital for future generations.” Ruby’s courage and defiance against injustice continues to inspire Fantasia in her own journey today.

Prioritizing Self-Care and Family

Fantasia understands the importance of balancing work with personal time.

“I prioritize rest and self-care by spending time with my family and traveling,” she says. “Having a trip planned or a family gathering to look forward to helps me recharge and stay motivated.” This commitment to self-care allows her to continue thriving both personally and professionally.

The Power of Consistency and Discipline

Looking ahead, Fantasia is motivated by the belief that hard work, discipline, and consistency are essential to achieving success.

“If you want it, go after it,” she says, quoting Denzel Washington: “Dreams without goals are just dreams and ultimately, they fuel disappointments. On the road to achieving your dreams, you must apply discipline, but more importantly, consistency. Because without commitment, you will never start, but without consistency, you will never finish.”

Her journey has taught her the importance of staying ready for change. “If you’ve been praying for a change, ask yourself, have you prepared yourself and made room for that change in your life?” she urges.

Our Commitment

Our ministry’s commitment to a culture of belonging supports culturally competent care education for our team members all year long, including during Black History Month each February.
