All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) can be a thrilling way to explore the outdoors, but when it comes to kids, safety must always come first.
Every year, thousands of children are injured in ATV accidents, most of them preventable with the right precautions. The ATV Safety Institute has outlined Eight Golden Rules to help families make sure every ride is a safe one.
1. Always Wear the Right Gear
Before starting the engine, gear up. Always wear a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots and gloves. Protective gear helps prevent serious injuries from falls or collisions.
2. Stay Off Paved Roads
ATVs are built for off-road use only. Never ride on paved roads except to cross safely and where permitted by law. Cars and trucks may not see or expect ATVs, creating a serious risk for riders.
3. Never Ride Under the Influence
Drugs and alcohol impair judgment and coordination. No one should operate an ATV under the influence, no matter their age
4. No Extra Passengers
Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV. Only two-person ATVs are designed for more than one rider, and even then, always follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines.
5. Ride an ATV That’s Right for Your Age
One of the leading causes of ATV injuries among children is riding a vehicle that’s too large or powerful. ATVs are designed with different engine sizes and power levels for specific age groups. Choose a vehicle that matches your child’s size, age and experience level — it’s one of the most important ways to prevent accidents.
6. Supervise Young Riders
Children younger than 16 should never ride unsupervised. Adult supervision ensures that safety rules are followed and provides immediate help if an emergency occurs.
7. Stick to Designated Trails
Ride only on approved trails and at safe speeds. Staying on marked paths helps reduce risks from unpredictable terrain or obstacles.
8. Take a Safety Course
Before heading out, complete a hands-on ATV RiderCourse℠ or take the free online E-Course at ATVsafety.org. These programs teach essential riding skills and safety techniques for riders of all ages.
Keep the Adventure Safe
Adult supervision is a must! By also choosing the right ATV, wearing the right gear and riding responsibly, you can help ensure your family’s outdoor adventures stay both fun and safe.
