Over the past 10 years, Celeste Shelvin has grown from an entry-level position to being a key player on Our Lady of Lourdes Health patient access team.
Celeste is driven by her passion for helping others and her love for connecting with people, making her current role a perfect fit. Her story exemplifies how our health system prioritizes team members’ careers and inspires them to achieve their fullest potential.
the draw of Lourdes: reputation and people
Celeste began working at Our Lady of Lourdes in 2013, starting in admitting before transitioning to the ER for two years. She returned to admitting, where she found her true calling in patient access.
Celeste welcomes people as they come into Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and helps patients get where they need to go. What initially drew her to work at the hospital was its reputation and the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of people.
“I always heard success stories about Lourdes, and I like to mingle,” she says. “Being able to work with people attracted me to this career.”
making a personal impact
Celeste’s time in the ER provided an even more personal level of interaction with patients, which left a lasting impact.
“There are so many success stories I have witnessed during my time here,” she says. “I get emotional many times, especially dealing with some of the patients coming in, telling their stories. But I really like my job.”
Before joining our team, Celeste worked in a more isolated environment which lacked the personal interactions she craved. When she started here, the difference was palpable.
“When I came to Lourdes, it was the people who mattered to me, and they still do,” Celeste says. “There are so many different personalities, and I definitely enjoy working with people.”
For Celeste, her job is more than just a paycheck. It’s a place where she feels supported and valued. She feels supported by her colleagues and leaders, which has been instrumental in her career journey.
“What’s important is a good job, which I definitely find here at Lourdes,” she says. “They support you in a good way, and they listen to you.”
prioritizing health and wellness
Working in healthcare has heightened Celeste’s awareness of her own health, and she makes sure to prioritize it after seeing patients’ journeys.
Celeste finds inspiration in the patients she serves and her colleagues she works alongside.
“A lot of these patients come in so ill, and then seeing them on another day when they’re getting better, those success stories inspire me,” Celeste says.
Celeste’s dedication to listening and understanding patients is a cornerstone of her work.
“Listening is definitely big here,” she says. “It makes the patients feel better that you’re actually listening to what they’re saying. They feel more comfortable.”
room to grow
Celeste has moved up in her time at Our Lady of Lourdes and aspires to grow in her career.
“I definitely plan on staying in healthcare,” she says. “I love helping people. I do plan on moving higher up eventually and one day becoming a manager where I can help others and show them what I’ve been learning here at Lourdes.”
