“God called me to become a sister, and He also called me to serve in the healthcare ministry,” Sr. Uyen Vu, FMOL, shares simply yet powerfully. Her journey is one of faith and dedication, guided by her deep belief in serving others.
Born in Vietnam, Sr. Uyen’s path to religious life was shaped by both hardship and unwavering faith. She fled the country with her family, seeking freedom and safety. After their journey led them to the U.S., Sr. Uyen felt a deep pull toward a life of service. She joined the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady, dedicating her life to healthcare ministry and walking alongside those in need.
Cherished Traditions
Among her favorite celebrations are the monthly Healing Masses on First Fridays and the May Crowning.
“Many people, team members, patients and family members, come to the Healing Mass to pray for loved ones and receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick,” she explains. Speakers often share powerful testimonies of how God has healed them, both physically and spiritually.
For the May Crowning, team members and friends gather to process to the statue of Mary, offering handmade flower crowns and bouquets.
“It’s always a joyful occasion, honoring Mother Mary, our patron saint, in the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady tradition,” Sr. Uyen says.
At Our Lady of Lourdes, she also treasures celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. “Bishop Deshotel has graciously celebrated Mass for us on this special day, and holy water bottles are shared with the congregation so they may bless their homes,” she says, reflecting on the significance of this day of healing.
Recognizing Compassion
Sr. Uyen believes the Franciscan Service Award program is vital. The highest honor a team member can receive, the FSA recognizes those who exemplify our core values of service, reverence and love for all of life, joyfulness of spirit, humility and justice.
“These team members go above and beyond to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” Sr. Uyen says. “Their genuine care and love make a lasting impact on patients, families and fellow team members.”
Reflecting on the uniqueness of the health system, Sr. Uyen adds, “Our health system is special because it’s a faith-based ministry where team members know God’s grace is ever-present. We can pray with and for one another, lifting each other up. I’m inspired seeing team members from all levels come together in prayer.”
Embracing the Present
When asked about a pivotal moment in her religious journey, Sr. Uyen shares a profound perspective: “The pivotal moment is now. I am grateful for everything that has happened and embrace what is happening now as I prepare to go to Paris. I trust God will give me the grace to remain thankful and at peace as I join my international community.”
Sr. Uyen’s words of encouragement for team members are heartfelt.
“Each of you is unique, called by God to serve,” she says. “I pray He grants you the wisdom and grace to know you are unconditionally loved. Be authentic. When you feel frustrated, call on Jesus. He is always with you.”
The Legacy Grows
Reflecting on the growth of the health system, Sr. Uyen marvels at how far it has come.
Our ministry began in 1984 with three hospitals: St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge and Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette. Now, 41 years later, the organization has grown to include St. Dominic Health in Jackson, Mississippi; Our Lady of the Angels in Bogalusa; and hundreds of primary and specialty care clinics across Louisiana and Mississippi.
“The mission continues to thrive, reaching more people with compassionate, faith-filled care,” Sr. Uyen says.
Celebrating Women’s History Month
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor the women who have shaped the world around us. Sr. Uyen’s story is just one example of how women have been foundational to our health system, leading with compassion, wisdom and unshakable faith. Founded by women, for all those in need, our mission is carried forward by countless women who lead with heart.
Sr. Uyen’s journey, rooted in faith and filled with compassion, continues to inspire those around her, one prayer, one healing and one act of love at a time.
