After spending years in various nursing roles, from bedside care to home health, Autumn “Sunshyne” Morris, RN, BSN, was ready for a change.
In June 2022, Sunshyne joined the team at Our Lady of the Angels as an RN case manager. Her passion for nursing, combined with a deep sense of community, has helped her find a meaningful career path in care coordination.
“One of the reasons I applied for this role was because it allowed me to experience a different aspect of nursing in care coordination,” Sunshyne says.
Stepping into case management offered her a chance to focus on patient care in a new way. And the local location? A perfect fit.
“It’s nice to be able to stay local and give back to our community,” Sunshyne says.
finding inspiration in healthcare
Three years ago, Sunshyne became a mom, shifting her career priorities. She had even considered leaving the healthcare profession prior to taking on her role at Our Lady of the Angels.
“After my priorities shifted, I was struggling to find a job in healthcare that fit into the life I was trying to build,” she says. Now, she feels called to continue in the medical field.
“Becoming much more family focused, I am thankful for the opportunity to work for an organization that allows me to have a healthy work-life balance,” she says.
Her team and leaders are supportive, recognizing the importance of family and allowing Sunshyne to stay connected to her personal priorities. Her passion for helping others is reflected in the patients and colleagues she works with every day.
“Hearing about what some of our patients persevere through really puts things into perspective,” Sunshyne says. “My colleagues, too, show an incredible level of compassion for our community.”
moments that bring meaning
Some of Sunshyne’s most meaningful memories come from patients and their families.
“I love it when they say things like, ‘You really are a ray of sunshine’ or ‘You brought some sunshine to my day,’” Sunshyne says. “It reassures me that I’m making a difference.”
Moments like this validate her decision to pursue her career path and remind her that she’s right where she’s meant to be.
Sunshyne’s commitment to Our Lady of the Angels and our health system stems from more than just her role — it’s about the people she works with.
“We all have bad days, but working with team members who care about and encourage you makes those days more manageable,” she says. “It’s important to feel supported both personally and professionally.”
happy where she’s meant to be
When asked where she hopes to go next in her career, Sunshyne’s response is simple: “Nowhere.” She’s content in her current role and hopes to continue serving in the position for the rest of her career.
For anyone considering joining Our Lady of the Angels or our health system, she has clear advice: “If you’re looking for a job where you can make a difference in the lives of others while working with team members who feel like family, give us a try!”
