Jason Rogers, MSN, RN, never set out to lead; in fact, he almost turned down his first leadership role in nursing — yet today, he’s shaping the future of healthcare at Our Lady of the Lake Health.

With 27 years of service with Our Lady of the Lake, Jason is now vice president, nursing, and neuro service line administrator. His career path is as inspiring as it is impactful. Beginning as a patient attendant while still in nursing school, Jason’s journey embodies growth, perseverance and a commitment to service.

Finding His Calling in Healthcare

Jason’s passion for healthcare took root in high school at Belaire’s Medical Magnet Program, where a sophomore medical terminology class lit a spark.

“It was my favorite class,” Jason recalls. “I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare, but that class solidified my direction.”

Initially aiming for medical school, Jason’s path shifted while juggling pre-med coursework and basketball in college. Inspired by male peers discussing nursing as a career, he pivoted.

“I realized nursing was a great way to serve my community,” Jason explains. “It was the right choice, and I’m thankful for that decision every day.”

Leadership Found Him

Jason’s leadership journey wasn’t something he sought — it came to him.

“I have never pursued a leadership role,” he shares. “Opportunities came my way because leaders saw something in me and encouraged me to take the next step.”

From bedside nursing to house manager and beyond, each role added layers to his expertise. Initially hesitant about leaving patient care, a conversation with a trusted colleague changed his perspective.

“He helped me see the impact I could have as a leader,” Jason says. “It’s about caring for the people who care for our patients and building strong relationships.”

Shaping the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals

As a graduate of Southern University, Jason values the diversity and collaboration he experienced there. These lessons inform his work with nursing students today, ensuring the pipeline of future caregivers remains robust.

Jason believes inspiring others begins with action.

“Our actions inspire people to join healthcare,” he says. “I’ve had people tell me they went into nursing because of how I cared for their loved ones. That’s what it’s all about — modeling the way.”

Opportunities for Men in Healthcare

As a leader in a predominantly female profession, Jason sees opportunities for men to bring unique strengths to the field.

“We need to be more nurturing and empathetic,” he notes. “I value a calming presence.”

Jason’s team is an example of this balanced approach, with about 30% of leadership roles held by men. Their compassion and confidence contribute to a supportive, effective environment.

Guiding Principles in Leadership

For Jason, leadership is about relationships.

“It’s all about how we leverage relationships to accomplish things for the community and the people we serve,” he emphasizes. Humility and a service mindset are central to his approach.

At its core, Jason’s career has been guided by Our Lady of the Lake’s mission

“Even in tough scenarios, we keep our mission at the center of every decision,” he says. “That’s what makes this a great place to work — the collaborative spirit, culture of safety and relationships we build.”

Words of Wisdom

Jason encourages anyone considering a career in nursing or healthcare leadership — especially men — to take the leap.

“It’s incredibly rewarding. Leadership is about caring for the team that cares for patients,” he says. “If you value relationships and want to make a difference, this field is for you.”
