Curry Allen, director for Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group, never expected to build a career in healthcare.

In fact, after college and a stint playing professional football, he saw hospitals as cold, sterile places full of germs. But a part-time job as a patient transporter changed everything.

“Interacting with patients and realizing that I could help bring them joy helped me know my career would be in healthcare,” he shares. “It all began there.”

That experience set him on a path through hospital operations, where he led housekeeping teams before moving into healthcare consulting. Eventually, he returned home to Baton Rouge — a move he now believes was God-ordained. “Every step has been by His grace, preparing me to serve people,” he says.

A Career Built on Opportunity

Curry joined Our Lady of the Lake as an administrative fellow in 2021, diving into his first major project: the LSU Sports Medicine Institute. From day one, Curry was given real responsibility.

“They empowered me to lead that project from start to finish, and that set the tone for everything I’ve done since,” he says.

Now, his focus is on building strong partnerships, particularly with Baton Rouge Community College and his alma mater, Southern University. These relationships are critical, he says, because so much of the local healthcare workforce, especially nurses, comes from these institutions.

“Investing in workforce development isn’t just good for Our Lady of the Lake — it strengthens healthcare for everyone,” Curry says.

Championing Men in Healthcare

Another passion of Curry’s is increasing representation in healthcare, particularly among men.

“When men see other men in these roles, it can resonate differently,” he explains. “It encourages them to take their own health seriously and consider careers in this field.”

That’s why he’s deeply involved in the Men in Healthcare CommUNITY group, where professionals share their journeys and find common ground. Looking ahead, he’s excited to expand the group’s reach into the broader community, helping more men understand the importance of prioritizing their health.

A Mission That Matters

Beyond the opportunities for growth and leadership, what Curry values most about Our Lady of the Lake is its faith-based mission.

“Our health system is a great place to work. We’re large, diverse and full of opportunities to grow. But what I love most is our faith-based mission.”

He’s especially grateful for the way the organization has embraced him. “As a Black man, that means everything. I’m grateful to be part of an organization that truly cares — not just for patients, but for the people who make it all happen.”
