For four decades, Malcolm DeWayne Adams has been more than just a maintenance worker at what is now Our Lady of the Angels Hospital. He’s been a trusted problem-solver, a listening ear and a source of laughter for everyone he meets. With a dedication that shines just as brightly as his personality, Malcolm reflects on his journey and the joys of his work.
Finding His Path in Maintenance
Straight out of high school, Malcolm joined the hospital workforce in search of steady employment.
“At the time, there weren’t many jobs in town,” he recalls. “I came here to the hospital looking for a job, and they gave it to me. I’ve just been here ever since.”
Over the years, Malcolm has worked in nearly every department in the building, but maintenance is where he found his true calling.
More Than Just Fixing Things
While many might think a maintenance role is just about repairs, Malcolm explains there’s much more to it.
“I wish more people knew the things that we have to deal with every day, but I think maybe people don’t really understand the intricacies of our department,” he explains. “It’s not just about fixing things. There are also policies, procedures and making sure the job is always done right, all at the same time.”
Malcolm doesn’t just fix equipment; he often finds himself fixing problems of a different kind.
“Sometimes, it might be people on my team that just need someone to listen to them. Not all problems can be fixed with your hands; sometimes, you need your ears to do the work.”
The Joy of Teamwork
Malcolm’s favorite part of his job is his team.
“Joking with my team! They’ll tell you the same thing about me too! I love to laugh and to make other people laugh!”
This sense of camaraderie is what has kept Malcolm motivated for so many years. He describes his team as a tight-knit group where everyone feels valued and supported, which is something he holds dear.
A Mentor Who Made an Impact
In his four decades of service, Malcolm has learned from many, but one person stands out: Beverly Sheridan.
“Beverly was strict, but she was also fair. She didn’t play favorites. Everyone was treated as an equal, and she was very easy to talk to,” Malcolm says. Beverly’s leadership style made a lasting impression on him, teaching him the importance of treating everyone with respect and fairness.
People Inspired
For Malcolm, it’s the people that make his job special.
“Getting up every morning and knowing that I am coming here, getting to see new faces of patients, and the faces of my team makes me happy,” he shares. Our Lady of the Angels has been more than just a workplace for Malcolm; it’s been a place where he’s built lifelong friendships and memories.
After 40 years, Malcolm still finds joy in what he does. Whether he’s fixing a problem or sharing a laugh, he’s dedicated to making a positive impact every day.
“I really do enjoy my job,” Malcolm says. And that passion, combined with his heart for others, is what has made him an invaluable part of the Our Lady of the Angels ministry.
Family First
Beyond his work, Malcolm treasures his family, especially his daughter.
“My daughter is the absolute biggest part of my life. She is my sunshine and the greatest joy in my life,” he says proudly. It’s this love for his family that keeps Malcolm grounded and focused, reminding him of what’s most important in life.
