Robert Coney has devoted 40 years to FMOL Health, applying his expertise and adaptability to keep the health system’s technology running smoothly.
A Career of Adaptability
Robert joined FMOL Health after his former employer went out of business.
“I heard from a former colleague that FMOL Health wanted to hire COBOL (common business-oriented language) programmers, which was what I did at that time,” he recalls. “It was a real blessing to get that job! It fit my skillset perfectly, and I loved that kind of work.”
Over the years, days turned into weeks, weeks into years, and the time flew by. In 2015, when the health system transitioned to Epic, Robert saw an opportunity.
“I remembered the story from my adolescent years of an aunt who refused to learn new computer skills when systems changed,” he says. “From her experiences, I learned that I must be flexible and learn new skills. When they announced that Epic is our new system, I immediately asked to be involved.”
Making a Difference Across the System
Robert’s role as an interface analyst is critical to the smooth operation of FMOL Health’s technology.
“Interfaces transmit information across the entire health system from before admission to after discharge. Secondary systems receive only the information they need to perform their tasks, and it is the interface team that determines what is needed,” he explains.
His favorite part of the job is developing new interfaces and troubleshooting issues when they arise.
Teamwork Across Distances
Though his team works remotely across different cities and states, Robert values the collaboration and support they share online.
“We meet often and group-chat in Teams, asking for help and helping others,” he says.
Mentorship and Guidance
Robert credits Luke Dufrene for introducing him to the interfaces team and teaching him about interdepartmental relationships, and Chris Newsom for supporting the interfaces team within the IT department to ensure workflow efficiency.
Over 40 years, Robert’s skill, dedication and adaptability have made him an indispensable part of FMOL Health’s mission to provide seamless, high-quality care through technology.
