A vibrant wrap. A kid-friendly design. And powerful technology that’s changing how we deliver imaging for children.
Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is now home to a newly installed Siemens MAGNETOM Vida 3T MRI machine, an exciting advancement that brings faster scans, more precise images, and a more comfortable experience for young patients and their families.
This advancement in imaging is a testament to the power of collaboration, generosity and vision, and it’s already making a difference.
Clearer Images, Faster Scans
The 3T MRI offers significantly improved image quality compared to standard 1.5T scanners. With the ability to scan in incredibly thin slices, it helps detect small abnormalities and diagnose complex conditions, especially involving the brain, spine and joints. This clarity is crucial when evaluating seizure disorders or orthopedic concerns.
Routine scans are also faster — by as much as 50 to 75 percent — which allows the team to see more patients each day and reduce wait times, especially for those requiring sedation.
Designed with Kids in Mind
What makes this MRI especially special is how it’s been designed to help children feel more comfortable. From a cheerful, immersive wrap to wall graphics featuring whimsical characters, the space is anything but clinical.
These designs aren’t just cute. They’re a form of preparation and support. When kids are engaged and understand what’s happening, they’re less afraid — and more cooperative.
Patients can explore the MRI experience beforehand with LEGO models, hear what the machine will sound like and practice staying still using VR goggles. On the day of the scan, they can even watch a movie while in the machine, helping time pass more peacefully. And for many, a parent is able to stay nearby for comfort.
Powered by Generosity
The new 3T MRI was funded by the state of Louisiana as part of a continued investment in our children’s hospital’s growth and ability to serve children across our region. The colorful wrap and welcoming design enhancements were made possible by generous donors through Driving the Future and Children’s Miracle Network, with special thanks to Walmart, Price LeBlanc and WAFB.
Installation was completed by Louisiana Specialty Services, and the machine was officially blessed in late June before its first patient scans began in July.
Thanks to this collaboration — and the dedicated work of our imaging and Child Life teams — our new MRI is already making a meaningful difference in the lives of the children we care for.
Because here, even the most advanced technology is designed with kids in mind.
