Healthy family habits can also include room for life’s sweet moments – and what could be sweeter than pie?

In honor of Pi Day, March 14, we’ve collected a few recipes to test out with your kids in the kitchen. Pull out the aprons, roll up your sleeves and get ready for a pie-making adventure that will bring you closer and let kids flex their math skills.

Classic Apple Pie: A Slice of Mathematical Perfection

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade if you’re feeling adventurous)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Roll out one pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the crust, then dot with butter.
  4. Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal, then cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  5. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Allow pie to cool before serving.

Instructions:

  1. Use a mixer and combine frozen strawberry lemonade, sweetened condensed milk and Cool Whip until fluffy.
  2. Pour into the graham cracker crust.
  3. Refrigerate or freeze until firm, at least four hours or overnight.

Variations: mix in chopped fresh strawberries for additional fiber and texture or use regular frozen lemonade or limeade.

Savory Spinach & Feta Pie: A Formula for Flavor

Ingredients:

  • 1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade if you prefer)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 cups fresh spinach, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and garlic, and cook until softened.
  3. Add the chopped spinach and cook until wilted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the crumbled feta cheese.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Roll out the pie crust and place it in a pie dish. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over the crust.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the spinach filling, then sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  9. Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Making pies together offers opportunities to bond and create memories while also teaching kids valuable life skills in the kitchen.
