From a high fever to a routine check-up, your child’s pediatrician is your first call. But did you know there’s a difference between a well visit and a sick visit — and how they’re billed?

Here’s what to know before your next appointment, so you’re never caught off guard.

What Is a Well Visit?

A well visit, also known as a preventive check-up, is all about keeping your child healthy as they grow. These visits are scheduled even when your child isn’t sick and usually happen once a year for kids ages 3 and up — and more often for babies and toddlers.

During a well visit, your provider and their team will:

  • Check vital signs and your child’s growth chart
  • Monitor developmental milestones
  • Talk about sleep, nutrition, behavior, safety and school
  • Give age-appropriate vaccines
  • Perform preventive screenings like vision or hearing tests

Most insurance plans cover well visits at no cost to you, though some screenings may be billed separately.

What Is a Sick Visit?

When your child isn’t feeling their best — think fever, sore throat, ear pain, or a sudden rash — it’s time for a sick visit. Other types of non-well visits include those to discuss concerns like asthma control, learning problems and mental health.

A sick visit may include:

  • A physical exam focused on symptoms
  • Diagnosis and treatment plans
  • Medication prescriptions or testing
  • Ongoing care for chronic conditions

Sick visits often come with a copay or other out-of-pocket costs, depending on your insurance plan.

Can One Visit Count as Both?

Sometimes, yes. If you come in for a well visit and your child also needs treatment for a new issue — say an ear infection or a medication refill — your provider may bill both a well visit and a sick visit.

This means you may be responsible for two types of charges. It’s not double billing. It reflects the extra care your child received beyond the routine check-up.

You’ll get answers, treatment and any necessary prescriptions without needing a separate appointment.

If you’re unsure how something will be billed, just ask at check-in or check-out. Your clinic team is here to help.
